The Nallur Kandaswamy Devasthanam, commonly known as Nallur Kovil, is the spiritual heart of the Jaffna Peninsula and a centerpiece of your "Living Heritage Route." Dedicated to Lord Murugan (the Hindu god of war and victory), it is an active center of worship that demands a high degree of reverence and adherence to tradition from all visitors.

The temple has a complex history dating back to 948 AD, having been built and demolished multiple times during the reigns of the Jaffna Kingdom and subsequent colonial periods. The current structure was established in 1734 during the Dutch era. It is uniquely known for its administrative precision and the strict punctuality with which its daily rituals and festivals are conducted.
