Mihintale, known as the "Cradle of Buddhism," is the site where Buddhism was first introduced to Sri Lanka in the 3rd century BCE. It is located just 12 km east of Anuradhapura.

According to ancient chronicles, the Indian missionary Arahant Mahinda (son of Emperor Ashoka) arrived at this mountain peak during the Poson full moon. There, he met King Devanampiya Tissa, who was hunting a deer. After testing the King's wisdom with a series of riddles, Mahinda converted him to Buddhism, making it the state religion.
