The Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi is one of the most sacred and historically significant sites in the world. Located in the Mahamewna Gardens of Anuradhapura. It is recognized as the oldest living human-planted tree in the world with a recorded planting date. It was planted in 288 BC, making it over 2,300 years old.

The tree grew from a sapling of the southern branch of the original Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, India, under which Siddhartha Gautama (the Buddha) attained Enlightenment.

It was ceremoniously planted by King Devanampiya Tissa in the Mahameghavana Royal Park.
